Rowan Cross Charm
gathered from the rowan tree and bound in red twine, this little cross carries a very old piece of protection. Across the British Isles, the rowan was the “wicken tree” or “quicken,” planted by the door and hung over the lintel to keep ill luck, mischief and unwelcome visitors from the house.
The red thread was part of the charm: an old rhyme tells of “rowan tree and red thread” putting “witches to their speed.” Together they were believed to be stronger than either alone.
Each cross is made by hand, with the twigs bound in the traditional way and finished with a small hanging hook, so it’s ready to place over a door, window or hearth, or by the bed or in the car. Traditionally, the cross was made on the eve of Beltane, but many hang one at Samhain too, when the veil is thin and the home needs a guard.
Because it’s real wood and natural twine, no two are exactly alike. approx. 8-10cm
