Samhain Corn Husk Doll
When the last sheaf was cut, the old farmers believed the spirit of the harvest had nowhere left to hide.
In the harvest traditions of Britain and Ireland, that spirit was gently coaxed into the final bundle of grain, which was then woven into a doll and carried home in celebration. later, this evolved into using corn husks.
She was kept by the hearth through the dark half of the year, so the spirit of the field could shelter safely until spring.
Our corn husk doll carries that old custom into Samhain, dressed for the season in husks dyed orange and black, with a little witch's hat and a besom for sweeping away what no longer serves. Set her on your altar or by the hearth as a keeper of the harvest and a guardian of the home through the long nights. Some like to give her a small offering of thanks, a pinch of grain, a berry, or a whispered wish.
